A Profile of The Association of African Cotton Producers

The Association of African Cotton Producers was created on December 22, 2004 in Cotonou (Benin).  Confronted by the crisis in the cotton sector which affects approximately 20 million people in West and Central Africa, cotton producers of twelve west and central African countries (Burkina Faso, Benin, Cameroon, Cote d'Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Mali, Senegal, Chad, Togo) met on December 21 and 22 in 2004 to analyze the crisis which affects the sector and to define together mobilization, positioning and actions’ strategies to enable them to defend their interests.
The purpose of this meeting of the producers was, to exchange on the international situation in order to understand the cotton problems in a more global context, then to analyze the crisis as undergone by each country. It led to the creation of AProCA.
AProCA closed the session with the mission to defend the interests of the African producers within a framework of cooperation on a continental level with the following goals:
- To gather the whole of the organizations of cotton producers performing on the African continent;
- To promote solidarity between the member organizations;
- To favour  dialoguing and co-operation between the members by dealing with questions of common interest;¶
- To collect, deal with and dispatch for the members any information in connection with cotton;
- To defend the cotton producers with any imbalance of the cotton world market;
- To exchange experiences between the member organizations.
Today thirteen countries are members of AProCA, since the membership of the Central African Republic in December 2006.
